Mardi Gras was amazing. On the first day, Sunday, got so many beads we didnt no what to do with them all.....Ohh wait we are traveling for 6 months and living out of backpacks, we have no room for beads. So we left them. On Monday, Lundi Gras; we spent all day wandering, drinking beers and frozen cocktails on the streets, collecting more beads, but being more fussy this time. Walked up and down bourbon street and around canal street watching the floats go by, and all the other acts inbetween. Even saw Quentin Tarantino! Tuesday, Mardi Gras, we didnt get up early, as it was raining & freezing cold. By the time we got into the city the parades had finished because of the bad weather. My foot was hurting alot. So we called it a day pretty early. By Wednesday, the streets were completely different, no beads and not many people. We walked around all day, and found a cool street in a not cool area with lots of music bars and clubs, we stopped in one and listened to a really good band the oopsie daisies. The singer was amazing. Gave me goose bumps. Thusday we got up to go into the city to look at the superdome, but my foot was hurting so much I could hardly walk, so off to the hospital we went. $450 later, a wrapped foot, corrective shoe and crutches we were on our way. We did get to see a bit of the Superdome from the outside. Friday we went to the city and took the trams around so as not to walk to far, and had some coffee and beignettes at Cafe Du Monde (not that special considering everyone had raved about the place!) Saturday we picked up a car and headed up north to Memphis... Drove for about 5 hours on the I-60 and parked up in a rest stop for the first night of our car camping. We put towels in all the windows to block out the lights and tried to share a fleecy blanket. It was freezing and neither of us slept well. Sunday we took a smaller back road, and stopped in a small place outside Memphis for some breakfast, which was a hard task as nowhere was open before 11. I guess they were all in church. We carried on up the road, and got to Graceland, Elvis home. Had a quick look around, it was nearly $40 each to get in to the museum and see his house, but he wasnt in so we ditched that plan. Got to memphis 20mins later and went walking, found Beale street with all the old blues bars, and read a lot about the history of the place. We went to the rock and soul museum, which was cool. Headed out of memphis at about 5pm towards Hot Springs. Drove for 3 hours and set up for night number 2 of car camping. We had stopped in Walmart and got some more fleecy material, so we had a blanket each, was a bit warmer, and got more sleep. The next morning we stopped in a small city called Little Rock for breakfast, it was really lovely. The sun was out for the first time in over a week, and the place looked lovely, nice buildings and very clean. Got on the road towards hot springs at 12ish. Took the back way, through some real American country. Beautiful mountain roads with the faint sound of banjos around every turn. I was so excited that to go swimming in one of the springs, but when we got there and I felt just how hot the water was, I soon changed my plan. The town was lovely, lots of very grand building, and lots of information of the history of the town around the streets, reminded me of the film phscyo the town was lovely and quaint, and then there were these buildings in the hills, that could be the scary hotel. Overactive imagination! We spent a few hours there looking around, and then back on the road for 4 hours to get closer to Dallas for our flight this morning. Our 3rd night car camping, and we nailed it, every window covered, and it was a lot warmer. The rest stops we were staying at had 24hr security and restrooms to use, so they were really handy. Ben drove over 850 Miles in 3 days! But was so much fun, some of the best bits of the trip so far! Just sat at the airport now waiting for out flight to LAX for our California adventure to start.
