Are you attending Festival this year? Here is some information on what the roles involve: 1. Baronial Household (or Retinue) A Baronial Household is a crew of people who take care of the Baron and Baroness during their reign, providing personal support and care both at home and at events so that they are free to perform their royal duties. This care and support takes place in various forms; the setting up and breaking down of camp, organizing court, taking notes at meetings, fetching and carrying, minding children, delivering messages, cooking, cleaning, and more. The members of a baronial household are chosen by the Baron and Baroness. Traditionally, the household is composed of people whom the baronial couple knows and trust to be hard-working, reliable and discreet. Think of it as being the stage crew for a major theatrical performance; they do the majority of the work behind the scenes that make Their Excellencies court flow smoothly and efficiently, and provide they assistance needed for Their Excellencies to perform their duties within the game. A good household can make the baronial couple look great. Customarily, there is a Head Lady-in-Waiting or Steward to wrangle the attendants behind the thrones for both the Baron and Baroness. The Head Lady-in-Waiting/Steward is like the stage director and tries to be at all events that the royal couple goes to. Generally, there is also a Captain of the Guard to wrangle the guards who provide muscle and ceremonial protection. The guards are often the people that put up the royal pavilion, thrones, unload the trailer, and handle any other brute force needs. A household also usually consists of the following, but is not limited to these positions: Head Lady-In-Waiting/Steward - Stage manager of the reign. A group of Ladies-in-Waiting - Stage hands and helpers to the Baroness outside of court. Captain of the Guard - In charge of heavy lifting and sets the schedule for guardsmen to escort the Baroness. The Guard - They set up and take down the royal pavilion, escort the Baroness outside of court and answer challenges in the Baronesss name. Herald and Scribe – part from heralding and court, this person usually keeps track of gifts received, awards given and other business that may require other work after court is completed. * A snippet of information from al-barran.outlands.org/court.php 2. Guards & Retinue: Why have them Not only do they make your job easier, but also they make better theatre for all participants. Adjust the number up front to the size of an event. Baronial Guard help you set up and take down for events (and this can be a lot of work) and may even be transport for the Regalia. Scribes do your scrolls and Ladies / Lords-in-Waiting free you to be an inspiration and help people enjoy an event (your jobs) without you having to worry about being fed. Guards and Household also serve to look after Royals when They visit. Your guards and household also serve to be the conduit for your ‘style’ of Court as Baron and Baroness, projecting to the populace the feelings and theatrical presence that you wish to create, and it is from this that the populace takes its lead. They also can provide a buffer zone between you and the populace when there are demands on your attention, or you are not ready to face everyone just before or at the beginning of, an event. What do they get out of it? Partly, service is its own reward. They know they have helped everything run smoother. Being a household member also means being up front and seeing what is happening through other eyes. This definitely includes watching the joy on the faces of Award recipients. How should they behave? To an extent, they represent you. They should be silent in Court and courteous and chivalrous to all. If they are not behaving as you would wish them to, speak to them (privily if possible). By agreeing to take on a job, they have agreed to accept its responsibilities. It is therefore wise to tell them what you expect from them at the beginning of their tenure, or as part of your announcements when looking for new ones. They have and need a right of closer contact with you than the rest of the Barony in order to perform their duties. They should assist you at all times, with their work taking precedence to their own wishes when on duty. However they must be able to look after their own needs beforehand and then be ready to assist you. This means that they should arrive at events in good time, preferably before you do, and also that you need to privately remember that they have their own needs, and look out for them. Ladies / Lords-in-Waiting You cannot live without them. They polish Coronets (if you ask politely), give you the right awards tokens when needed and make sure that you have food and drink. They may also be asked to help with maintenance of regalia, preparing for events, help you with newcomers, arrange your garb just before entrances, be lent out to visiting Royalty. Good ones will anticipate your needs. Cherish them, thank them, and give them the time they need for themselves. They are traditionally in service to the Baroness, the Princess, or the Queen, and the male counterpart may be called a Lord in waiting (and be in service to the Baron, Prince or King) or Page, with similar duties. This is one area where the gender roles are preserved, that is female assistance to female pointy hats, and male assistants to male pointy hats. * A snippet of an article written by Baron Hrolf Herjolfssen OP, Droungarios of the Southern Oceans and Mistress Madelaine de Bourgogne OL, OP
