Gretchen Van Buren and 28 year old Canequins Fort Knox during their driving lesson this morning. Knox is teaching Gretchen the basics of driving while her horse, Randellane Red Oracle, aka Rufus, is starting the process of becoming a carriage horse. Gretchen realized that green horse + novice driver = bad idea, so she is putting in the hours now to develop some competency as a whip before her horse is ready to hook next year. Today was only her third lesson, but already, as shown in these pictures, she is learning the concept of sending the horse into a soft hand to develop thoroughness. We have worked on this under saddle too, but driving gives you another perspective of how it works. Wonderful to be able to combine the disciplines!
