Gromy is our pet of the day! He is a 13 year old chocolate lab who moved here from Dubai about 6 weeks ago. You can see here how sweet and smoochable he is! His dad showed us the picture of him goofing off with his sister and we couldnt help sharing it :) The poor guy has chronic allergic skin disease which has gotten worse since moving to Florida. We sometimes call Florida the allergy capital of the world because so many of our patients are so itchy :( The tricky thing about dogs with skin disease from environmental allergens like pollen or dust mites (Atopy, officially) is that they are hard to treat. The pets suffer and their families get frustrated. We can help a lot in the short term but long term solutions can be complicated, costly and intermittently effective. Allergy testing and injections work beautifully for some pets but is costly up front and time intensive for families. There is a new drug on the market (Apoquel) that has worked so well that the company literally cannot manufacture it fast enough to keep up with demand...we are hoping that it has better availability soon & when it does, well shout it from the rooftop! Until then, all of our poor itchy patients will continue to receive an arsenal of sprays, shampoos, pills,etc. to keep them comfortable.
