“Growth is a greater mystery than death. All of us can understand failure … but not even the successful man can begin to describe the impalpable elations and apprehensions of growth.” Norman Mailer, b. Jan. 31, 1923. He knew a lot about failure but learned how to grow. A friend of his told me the other day that when Mailer reached a certain age, he said he was no longer waking up in the morning with an obsession about whom he would have to fight that day.
