Gruber theorizes that Apple is heading into real luxury brand status. Translation: he thinks some of its watches might sell for many thousands of dollars. He is right. Not for me. Funny, several years ago I got a tour of Swiss watch maker Franck Muller. Youtubes founder Chad Hurley wears one. Some of its watches sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. I learned it doesnt use gold in any of its products. Why not? Gold is too cheap, my guide said. If true the high end Apple Watch isnt for me. Why? I just dont have that kind of cash. $349? I can do that with a little saving. $5,000? Nah. But I bet some people will. Why? To a billionaire that simply doesnt matter. I disagree with his thesis that Silicon Valley wont get it. All you have to do is visit and see all the high-end cars to see the wealth in the valley to know that a $5,000 watch will find many buyers. I just find it sad that we cant put that wealth to better use. That doesnt mean I dont get it.
