Guardian Newspaper T&T Under-11 boys and both Under-13 teams captured gold medals at the Eighth Caribbean Regional Table-Tennis Federation Pre-Cadet Championship which ended at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Georgetown, Guyana on Sunday. The boys Under-11 quartet of Brandon Lee Young, Messiah Walcott, Aaron Amoroso and Derron Douglas registered wins over Barbados and Aruba, by 3-0 margins and 3-1 against Guyana I on Sunday, adding to its 3-0 sweep of Guyana II to top its five-team round-robin pool with a 4-0 record. Against Aruba, Douglas overcame Jonatan Paredes 11-5, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, Brandon Lee Young rallied past Sjoerd Guertsen 11-5, 13-15, 11-6, 11-2 and Mesiah Walcott punished Robert Dirksen 11-3, 11-0, 11-4 Douglas then outlasted Barbadian Ramon Maxwell 13-15, 8-11, 11-8, 17-15, 12-10; Brandon Lee Young crushed Asaba Moore 11-4, 11-7, 11-7 and Messiah Walcott rallied past Ronico Sealy 11-5, 19-17, 11-7. And in their meeting with Guyana I, Douglas beat Tyriq Saunders 11-7, 8-11, 11-13, 11-7, 11-5; Lee Young scolded Terence Raush 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 and Lee Young easing past Saunders. For Guyana, Niron Bissu beat Aaron Amoroso 11-8, 11-4, 11-9. In the first triumph against Guyana II, Douglas defeated Kaysan Ninvalle 11-2, 11-6, 12-14, 11-6; Lee Young cruised past Brandon Jaikaran 14-12, 11-3, 11-5 and Walcott swept aside Yeudisir Persaud 11-8, 11-9, 11-7. The trio of Guyana II, Guyana I and Barbados all ended with 2-2 records, but Guyana II got silver ahead of their fellow countrymen due to a better sets points ratio won while the Bajans were fourth. The Girls Under-13 squad of Ray J Thomas, Jasher De Gannes, Chelsea Fong and Shanekah Johnson first swept Barbados 3-0 in their four-team round-robin pool. De Gannes beat Janae Lewis 11-6, 11-9, 11-8; Ray J Thomas stopping Jazel Griffith 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 and Shanekah Johnson overcoming Kenady King 11-9, 11-5, 11-5 to give T&T a 1-0 start ahead of matches against Guyana 1 and II. Guyana 1 also has a 1-0 record after beating its second team, 3-0. They then made light work of Guyana II and I with 3-0 trouncing to also end with am impeccable record of 3-0 and without losing a match. In the win over Guyana II, Jasher De Gannes won over Davonna Bess 11-6, 11-4, 11-7; Ray J Thomas defeated Aneka Phillips 13-11, 11-9, 11-6 and Fong whipped Brittney Bunbury 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 and against Guyana I, Thomas beat Kristie Lopes 11-6, 11-7, 11-9; De Gannes crushed Simran Bissu 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 and Shanekah Johnson blasted Priyana Ramdhani 11-2, 11-3, 11-3. The Under-13 boys team of Joshua Maxwell, Jakeem Welch, Brandon Beharry and Roberto Johnson had a mixed afternoon session on Sunday as they first went under to Guyana I, 1-3 before blanking Barbados and Guyana I, both by 3-0 margins to end in a three-way tie for first with 3-1 records with Barbados and Guyana. Against the host, Welch was beaten by by Michael Wong 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, but Maxwell got T&T even after easing past Khalil Ninvalle 11-5, 11-7, 11-4. Guyana then got wins from Jeremy Singh and Wong over Johnson (7-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7, 11-9) and Maxwell (11-8, 11-7, 11-3) to complete the victory. Two hours later, the local trio returned with a vengeance with Maxwell defeating Barbadian Ramon Jackman 11-8, 11-8, 4-11, 11-5; Welch over Marcus Smith 12-10, 11-9, 11-9 and Johnson powering past Adam King 11-3, 11-8, 11-4. John then coasted past Guyana II’s Vincente Henery 11-2, 11-2, 11-3; Welch downed Amit Mookram 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 and Brandon Beharry clobbered Jordan Cornway, 11-3, 11-5, 11-8. In their opener, T&T withstood some resistence from Aruba before coming away with a 3-1 triumph. For T&T, Emme Arias won the opener over Jeandry Matilda 11-5, 11-8, 11-5 but Aruba drew level at 1-1 when Jean-Claude Hoek upstaged Beharry 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6. Welch restored T&T’s lead at 2-1 in the best-of-five match series via his 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 win over Ethan De Lange while Arias battled past Hoek 11-6, 15-17, 11-7, 11-7 to seal the victory. In the Under-11 girls, T&T is being represented by Shurja Welch, Ackayla Lucas, USA-based Shreya Maharaj and Shyana Samnarine. They are in a three-team series which includes Guyana and a mixed team. The team events were expected to conclude last night ahead of the doubles events which serve off today followed by the singles, later in the week. And in the girls Under-11, T&T had to settle for silver behind host Guyana after losing the gold medal decider, with Guyana in which Maharaj was the lone T&T player to win a match, 12-10, 9-11, 11-13, 11-6, 11-5 over Abigail Martin.
