I was always playing the same old licks and it was getting pretty stale. That caught my eye - just the ticket for an aspiring fingerstyle guitar player. I thought to myself, Wow, he said that about Rick Washbrook? Then I thought Hey, I wouldnt mind sounding a bit more Like Lenny Breau, so I decided to check Rick Washbrook out. We set up the first lesson, and we were off... well, once Id extracted his cats claws from my leg, and the cat had settled down for a snooze in my guitar case, then we were off. Rick gave lessons in his cozy apartment with a brick fireplace, and it was a good setting for lessons (feline sneak attacks aside). Ricks sessions were laid-back, but with a flexible structure that kept us moving forward. I liked the way that Rick layered instruction with practical examples. Wed learn something new, and then reinforce it with some repetition, and then wed have some fun by jamming together on what wed learned. A couple of years later, Im still not quite playing like Lenny Breau (the man is a guitar genius, after all), but my playing has improved a lot, and I can do a pretty reasonable version of Cannonball Rag. More importantly, thanks to Rick, my love of guitar playing has been rekindled, my music is far from stale, and Im really excited about trying new stuff... My musical horizons have broadened, to the point that Ive even picked up a banjo (time for some more lessons!). Thank you, Rick Washbrook!
