Gun Owners of America (GOA) in USA Today; email received August 2, 2013: "Yesterday, [August 1, 2013] GOA Director of Communications Erich Pratt authored the opposing piece in USA Today [regarding] a debate that centered on whether Congress should fund anti-gun junk science. "Pratt argued that taxpayers should not be forced to pay for slanted studies that are inevitably aimed at diminishing their rights. While examples abound, gun owners will certainly remember how the Centers for Disease Control used “taxpayer-funded research as a shill to promote an anti-gun political agenda,” before Congress banned them from doing so in 1996. "USA Today argued that we need such government studies so lawmakers can learn how to reduce gun violence. Pratt said, just listen to our first responders: "Eighty percent of law enforcement, according to a PoliceOne survey of more than 15,000 officers, believe that legally armed citizens (carrying concealed) would likely have "reduced the number of casualties in recent mass shooting(s)." "Bottom line,” Pratt said, “leave the studies and politicking to the private sector, and prevent taxpayer money from sponsoring politically motivated junk science.”"
