HAMMONTON Up for sale is an extremely rare museum quality Tabletop Shaker Swift made for their own community and NOT for one of their world stores. Actually it was in a museum exhibit on the Shakers in Philadelphia in 1962 and so described in their exhibit bulletin. A turn base tabletop swift it was described. It is made of mixed woods as were many of the community items made for themselves before 1870. ie. dippers / dry measures had a pine bottom, oak bowl, and maple handles, Yarn winders were made of oak and maple. This swift was made in the 1840s. If you look at the leading Shaker auctions like Willis Henry Auctions in Maine you will not find even one of these. Just the world store type made of maple and a C-clamp on the bottom and top made for wax or pins. They are bring $700-900 plus buyers premium. This will probably end up with the rest of my collect at Willis Henry Auctions in the future. I use his on line catalogs for reference and identification all the time. A great source of information. This amazing example is TOTALLY original in every way with the absolute best patina and surface you could ask for. It measures 19 tall and about 19.5 across when open. The condition is PERFECT. The shaft is made of mahogany and the dozen staves are walnut. The unusual base is made of pine and the top of the base has the finest mahogany paint graining I have ever seen in my life and I have seen a lot!! The darning egg top is exactly like their early chairs. (see last photo of a chair finial ) I bought this item from Diane Dolphin Antiques one of New Englands leading Shaker dealers and authorities. I am pricing it at what I believe is an extremely great price of $1500. It could be worth a lot more shared with my facebook site South Jersey Antiques and Collectables where you will find many Shaker items plus unique antiques such as early furniture, folk art, and Americana So check it out!
