HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY! We all now know that Chris wasnt the first European to step on North American soil, and we all know that he was not where he thoughth he was, thus giving the then-indigenous people the somewhat confusing reference as Indians, but many generations of us cherished the version of the Discovery of America as it was presented in our elementary school history classes as one of the most memorable stories from our early education. It remains a significant piece of our history, despite presentliy taught challenges to his identity as the first, but rather for the lessons learned from Chris voiyage, including following through on dreams against great odds, determined tenacity, surviving through adversity, leadership proven by his maintenance of morale among a nearly mutinous crew, and truly great feats of discovery, despite his primitive vessels and equipment and criticism from common men who thought him crazy, to religious leaders who believed his actions to be heritic. Columbus and his accomplishments are most worthy of recognition, as are the indigenous peoples who first welcomed all of the early sea-faring explorers who found their way to the Americas. Attached is one of my favorite pictures from a few years back of a replica of, I believe, the Santa Maria departing after having discovered Maysville one particuclarly beautiful misty morning. I think that one of the greatest messages to be celebrated on Columbus Day is that of believing in yourself, and following your dreams despite diversity, discouragement or cricism you may receive from others. Hats off to Christopher Columbus for his accomplishments 522 years and 5 days ago, and the example he has set for us all.
