HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY-LEARN ABOUT YOUR FREEDOM FIGHTERS LATE GHANA KANTA SAIKIA, from Tezpur, was a person who fought during the freedom movement of India and was an active Freedom Fighter of the State Of Assam.During his fight for freedom,he was jailed several times and was tortured by the British(tortures included hammering Nails in the finger-joints & toes, laying naked on ice-slabs for hours,beating with clubs,electric shocks)... GHANA KANTA SAIKIA,S/O Late Anandiram Saikia, Was Born In 1912 In Dekargaon(Tezpur).He Completed His Schooling From Tezpur Academy.From a very early age,he was fascinated by the preachings of Mahatma Gandhi and soon started to follow his path of AHIMSA and contributed towards the Freedom Movement In Tezpur. He fought for freedom with prominent fighters such as Late Thanuram Bora, Late Pithuram Das, Late Bijoy Bhagawati, Late Purnonarayan Singh.When Gandhi Visited Assam,the Mahatma Acknowledged the fight run by the team and promised to support them in whichever way possible. GHANA KANTA SAIKIA also ran an assamese weekly newspaper during the movement to enlighten the local people on the FREEDOM MOVEMENT issue. He was jailed on 2 occasions by the British,comprising of a total of 1 and half years just for fighting for freedom.He was jailed together with Late Bishnuram Medhi(ex Governor Tamil Nadu) and later,fought together against the British Regime .During his time in jail,he was tortured everyday ranging from nails in joints to electric shocks. Post Independence,He was awarded the TAMPATRA award by the PRESIDENT OF INDIA for his efforts during the movement.He was also awarded and acknowledge by the STATE GOVT OF ASSAM.As a Gratitude,he was supported by Both Central & State Govt With Pension. During The 90s, The State Govt ( run by late CM Hiteshwar Saikia,Congress) Invited Mr.Ghana Kanta Saikia To Talk & Support Congress By Attending A Function Organised By The Govt. Mr.Saikia Declined The Invitation From The CM stating That Moi Gandhi r Congress Ok Support Korisilu,Tumar Congress Ok Nohoi..Such Was The Aura Of This Man. The Great Personality Breathed His Last On 16th January 2003 at his residence in Kamarchuburi,Tezpur.
