HAPPY SABBATH: We all talk to ourselves, but the important thing is, what do we say? Some people pity themselves. If you do, your greatest enemy is yourself. Dr Frank Crane, (1861-1928) was a Presbyterian minister, and writer. Wrote, If I were twenty one said, Pity is a glorious and creditable attribute---when it flows out toward another. Then it is like the mountain brook, carrying health and joy to all who drink of its cool flow or even gaze upon its happy play. But pity, when it turns upon self, is like stagnant pool, covered with harmful scum, concealing ugly, slimy things in its foul ooze. One who is sorry for himself is already half-beaten .... Self Pity is the collapse of all the faculties, it is cowardly surrender in the face of the enemy. Courage and Self Pity are as different as Black and White. I think of David, Caleb, Joshua, Gideon, men of courage. When David and his men returned from Ziklag and found their homes burned and their families gone, it was a distressing situation. The people even spoke of stoning David because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons, and for his daughters; And for their wives: but David encouraged himself in the LORD HIS GOD ( 1 Sam. 30:6). David had learned to talk to himself, but not In the language of Self-Pity. Why art thou cast down, O my Soul? And why art thou agitated, perturbed, upset, unnerved in me? Hope thou in GOD: for I shall praise HIM for the help of HIS Countenance, His impenetrable eyes and inscrutable countenance (Ps. 42:5). There is a future for a man who will talk to himself like that! It is the kind of council to give to Poppie. It brings inspiration, encouragement, hope, and Verve to my old soul. The Bible, saves us from self-Pity; you will never feel abused, neglected, or resentful, just stay in the center Of JESUS influence.
