HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 5 (acn) Kenneth Kaunda, former President of Zambia (1964-1991) and a well-known African anti-colonialist leader, received on Tuesday in this capital the Solidarity Order given by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba. Esteban Lazo, member of the Politburo of the Cuban Communist Party and President of the National Assembly of the People’s Power, presented the award to the 89 year-old professor and politician, in a ceremony held at the Jose Marti Memorial located at Havana’s Revolution Square. The Order acknowledges the role played by Kaunda in the struggle against discrimination and segregation and for the independence of the then North Rhodesia (currently Zambia), and for his contribution to the liberation of the rest of the countries of the Front Line. It is also a demonstration of gratitude for his permanent solidarity in the struggle against Washington’s blockade of Cuba and in the battle for justice for the five Cuban antiterrorists unfairly condemned in the United States, underlined Kenia Serrano, president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples. In his words of appreciation, Kaunda highlighted the historic bonds of friendship existing between Cuba and Zambia, which -he said- date back to his country’s struggle for its independence, and described Commander in Chief Fidel Castro as a great son of Africa. He also recalled the Caribbean island’s contribution to the efforts of the African continent to overcome the structural backward state derived from centuries of colonialism, and the contribution made by Cubans in the fields of health and education and in the training of human resources, among other spheres. For his merits as tireless fighter for independence and for his friendship with Cuba, Kenneth Kaunda was presented with the Jose Marti Order in 1975.
