On the 19th of Ramadan, while worshipping in the Great Mosque of Kufa, Hazrat Ali (May Allah pleased with him) was attacked by the Khawarij Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam. After few days later on February 28, 661 (21 Ramadan 40 A.H) he registered his name in the books of great Martyrs.
