HE THAT IS DOWN... On Tuesday, some thugs engaged the traffic wardens and mobile police men in a duel and fracas erupted because the officers were not swiftly passing the vehicles on our line. The dare-devil political hooligans pulled down bottles from a moving truck and broke them on the main road and dared the Police officers to shoot at them. One of them hit the bonnet of the 2014 model Avensis car I was driving as I was the next car to get to the main road. I am never afraid but I must admit that I was a bit jittery that day for a number of reasons... 1. Provocation is a consequence of reciprocal danger! Anyone who cannot exercise restraint over his anger should not own arms or work for any armed force! Its essentially a profession of disciplined people. If you wish to work for any arms-carrying agency, you must first kill your temper and manage your anger! Tame your anger If you hold a trigger! Any enraged officer would pull the trigger at the instance that the civilian hit him on uniform in the chest in anger in the full glare of the public If only to preserve his ego. I guess this explains the incessant extra-judicial killings hinged on the indiscipline of trigger-happy Police officers and soldiers. I remember a Naval officer once asked a man who bashed his car in Lagos to open his mouth whilst he pumped live bullets into his throat! Of course he died! 2. You dont have to seek trouble before you encounter danger! Life is not as simple as it looks! Many are victims of fortuitous circumstances! Those who were just going on their own could be hit by stray bullets If the situation wasnt brought under control. Same way pedestrians get hit by armed robbers bullets during Bank robbery operation. The political hooligans were fully armed with guns and charms as well as the Police officers had their rifles. Everything was set for explosive danger! All that was required was for one indisciplined officer or drunk tout to let his bullet escape and there would be a free-for-all. There was I in the midst of it all, trying to navigate my way to my home from my lawful place of business. I was thinking of what to write in the midst of the crisis! Word Bank indeed. The Head tout passed my car, the Head police stopped the car! I was caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea. May God continually protect us and keep our movement away from harms way! 3. He that is down needs fear no fall...Now, this is the crux of the matter. This John Bunyan nuggetum was on permanent replay in my head all through the few minutes that the pogrom lasted. I began to realise the true meaning of those ageless words. The poor, deprived, hopeless and the haveless have little or no stake in the day of trouble! Only those who have can lose! The bird who perches on the rope leaves at the instance the rope breaks! The one whose life is a ruin gives no hoot about the impending damnation of anothers life and property damage! Those who have nothing to lose are the first to start a revolt, a rebellious fracas or a revolution! When there is any wanton destruction of lives and property, arson and total breakdown of law and order, only those who really do have a life of worth and valuable property who are at the receiving end would be scared of losing something! This is why it is easy for Northern normads to cause trouble and orchestrate a massacre- they own nothing of worth and are perpetually itinerant! How do you bring those with no known fixed address to book? My mind kept on saying, what If the vehicle I drove which was in the middle of it all was torched, razed, windshield broken and lights smashed to herald the impending crisis, what would I do? The truth is that there is an unwritten mild war and aggression between the poor and the rich! Any avenue to forment trouble is a great opportunity to destroy what the rich owns! Little wonder you find commercial motorcyclists (Okada men) pouncing heavily in annoyance, maiming and even killing any car owner who mistakenly hits one of them! All you need to do to earn the gift of death as a rich man is to offend the poor in the gathering of the angry poor! They will kill you for free! Take heed! Its a vendetta of the have-nots against the opulent! So, dear friends, be careful when you wish for war, fracas, violence or armed hostility If you own anything of worth, for he that is down needs fear no fall! -Tosin Ayo, (The word bank).
