HEADS UP!!!! Please show up and support this! CALL TO ACTION: On December 9th (tomorrow), the City Council will have the second and final reading on a proposal to issue stay away orders that would ban criminals from our parks for up to a year. The length of the stay away order will increase with each subsequent crime. The range is 24 hours to 1 year. The proposal is based on the successful stay away ordinance which was has been used in our libraries for the past two years. Since its adoption, calls for service have dramatically decreased and our libraries have become the safe knowledge zones as they were intended to be. Opponents to this ordinance claim that asking criminals to stay away from our parks is anti-poverty and anti- homeless. The argument is that they have no place else to go. I submit that homelessness and poverty are issues that must be dealt with, and I am encouraged by the steps the city is currently taking to tackle these problems. But this ordinance is not related to those problems. Our parks should be places for carefree recreation. Criminal behavior has no place on the playground. As a mother of a ten year old I have spent countless hours in our city parks. I, like many of you have seen it all; drug dealing, smoking, defecation, fights etc. This ordinance will send a message that deviant behavior will not be tolerated.
