HEALTHY ZONE UPDATE Finding the Right Sport & Healthy Eating on a Budget Finding the Right Sport Health related fitness is important for children and adolescents. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Team sports have a lot of physical and mental health benefits including increased self-esteem, coordination and general fitness. However, some children are not natural athletes and may not be interested in sports. Its important for parents to encourage kids to be active and provide different opportunities for exercise. Sometimes learning about sports can be overwhelming. Be sure to teach your child the rules of a game that they might show interest in. Physical Education and intramural programs at school can be a good way to get your child exposed to different activities. Finding the right sport for your child is the key. There are dozens of sports to try, so your child may not have found the one that they like yet. Different sports require different skill sets. Some people may prefer an individual sport like swimming, golf, gymnastics, tennis or skating, while others may play better with a team. Free play is important for children who are not a part of organized sports. Free play activities include swimming, shooting hoops, riding a bike, running, dancing and many other activities. Its also important to have organized family activities, such as going on family walks/bike rides after dinner, and going to the park. Most of all, encourage your child to be active in her or her own way! Healthy Eating on a Budget Learning strategies to eating healthy on a budget can be done without hurting your wallet! Here are a few helpful tips to guide your grocery shopping trips: Shop the perimeter of the store: healthy, fresh foods are generally found here. Look for generic brands: they are usually much cheaper. Shop at your local farmers market: In-season fruits and veggies are cheaper. Create a weekly menu: being prepared for the week will help save time and money. Limit dining out and fast food: these foods are higher in cost, fat, salt and calories. Buy frozen fruits and veggies: they are cheaper and just as nutritious because they are packaged at peak of freshness. Source: University of California, Riverside.
