HERALD SUN | Home horror is a people problem 3AW Drive presenter Tom Elliot says: When I bought my first house in 1994, I was forced to compete with 4.5 million Victorians for the privilege of ownership. In contrast today’s buyers are part of a population approaching 6 million and still rising at the rapid rate of 100,000 people a year. Immigration from interstate and overseas has brought with it many benefits, among them better food, a more diverse culture and a reduced colonial mentality. Unfortunately, it has also brought with it immense new demand for homes, particularly those located in the inner and middle suburbs. Until we work out a way to conjure up more land close to the city, reducing population growth is the only sure-fire method of denting property prices.
