HERB OF THE DAY - NETTLE (Urtica dioica) • Nettle is used to strengthen and support the whole body as it is a blood tonic and purifier. • It is used specifically in cases of childhood eczema, and beneficial especially in nervous eczema. • As an astringent it may well be used for nose bleeds. • The roots and leaves open the passages of the lungs, which is the cause of wheezing and shortness of breath. • It helps to expectorate phlegm. As a gargle is it helps the swelling of the mouth and throat. • Nettles are rich in vitamins and minerals. • The leaves are used mainly for their diuretic properties and an infusion relieves high blood pressure and cystitis. • The mineral-rich leaves are used in the treatment of anaemia. • A decoction of the root is astringent and indicated for diarrhoea. • The warm tea is used for asthma, mucous conditions of the lungs, diarrhoea, dysentery and haemorrhoids. • It is effective against low energy and fatigue. • For arthritic and rheumatic problems nettles are used both internally and externally. • A tincture made from the seeds is recommended for goiter and low thyroid. In raising thyroid function, it effectively reduces associated obesity. • Nettle can successfully used in iron deficiency anaemia. It is nourishing and building and good to take in pregnancy. It is also used for lethargy, weakness and feelings of heaviness in the body. • The juice of a nettle will relieve a nettle sting strangely enough and rubbing stiff joints with fresh nettles gives instant relief. • Nettle (tea) may stimulate blood circulation and alleviate hypotension (by increasing blood pressure). • Nettle leaf alleviates allergies, being a natural anti-histamine, and reverses itching eyes, ears & throat in allergy sufferers. • It also stimulates the activity of T-Lymphocytes, lowers elevated blood sugar levels, and the urtica dioica agglutinin (a lectin) content of Nettle may inhibit some types of Viruses.
