HERES A SNEAK PEEK OF LOVE CHANGES The last time Dawn was here she was dropping off both me and Spider. I was in the front seat, pregnant, due any day. Spider was in the back making love to his copy of Sports Illustrated. We had just crossed the 138th Street Bridge and hadn’t heard a peep out of him so far, so I think Dawn forgot he was back there. She was telling me that Kyle broke up with her, and she didn’t know why. Kyle bought her two pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage for her Valentine-birthday. He made dinner reservations for Tavern on the Green, so Dawn was getting dressed. She said Kyle carried the two large suitcases into her walk-in closet and came back out, looking like he’d seen a ghost. “How many bags do you have?” he asked. “A hundred and twenty-seven,” Dawn answered. Without looking at her or giving her any explanation, Kyle walked out and didn’t come back. He wasn’t returning her calls, and she had no clue what was wrong with him. Now Spider, quiet the whole ride, decided to dip in on our conversation. He asked, “How much does one of those bags cost?” Dawn answered him, “About a thousand, give or take.” Spider laughed that goofy laugh, “Huh-ha,” and he buried his face back in his magazine. Spider and I had been together forever and a day, and the one thing I’ve learned is this: when Spider laughs that goofy laugh, don’t ask him what he’s thinking, not unless I want to get my feelings hurt. Spider wouldn’t hurt a fly, but he would most certainly hurt some feelings. I tried to run interference, “Ooh, girl. This baby is pressing on my bladder. I gotta pee!” Dawn wasn’t hearing me. She pulled over so fast, the car jerked, and I banged my head on my window. She put the car in park, turned around in her seat, and faced Spider, “Okay, Spider Man. Come wit’ it. You know something that I don’t know?” Spider looked at me, pleading with his eyes. I jiggled in my seat. “Dawn, please! Talk about this later. I can’t hold it!” Dawn shut me down with an open palm to my face. “Well, Spider. If you got something to say, say it!” Spider closed his magazine and sat back. He took a deep breath, “One hundred and twenty-seven bags at a thousand dollars a pop? It all adds up.” Dawn looked at him like he was crazy. “How you figure?” “Do the math. At a thousand dollars a pop, this cat’s either wondering how he’s going to come up with over a hundred thousand dollars to keep you happy, or he’s thinking, a hundred and twenty-seven bags, if he bought two, who are the other fifty-three cats.” Spider’s math was off, but he made his point. He’s cold, but honest. At that, Dawn twisted back around in her seat, but her hands and knees were trembling. She had a smile on her face, but it wasn’t the happy one. It was that smile she wore just before she exploded. I always used to say Dawn was mean for no reason, but right then and there, I realized that either my sister had matured, or she loved the hell outta me, because she didn’t say a word. But when she dropped us off, she was so pissed she sped off with the back door still open. Had anybody else said that to her, she would’ve laid him or her out with four-letter words. Dawn and Kyle eventually worked things out, but ever since then, she never said more than two words to Spider.
