HOLLYWOOD AND GENEALOGY Looking back at the cast list, I noticed that the current Hollywood mega-star, Robert Pattinson was also starring in QUEEN OF THE DESERT as the legendary figure T.E. Lawrence. Knowing that the Pattinson name is relatively localized in the Northern England counties along the Scottish border (Yorkshire, Northumberland, Durham, Cumbria, and Lancashire) and that Gertrude Bell’s family as well as Robert Pattinson’s resided in these areas, my genealogist spidey-sense perked up wondering if there was any possible connection between the two family lines. While probably a very distant connection, it is entirely possible they may be related through a common ancestor. And what an ancestor! I wouldn’t sneeze at being connected to such a family line. Gertrude’s grandmother Margaret Pattinson’s father was the illustrious Hugh Lee Pattinson. According to the Dictionary of National Biography, Hugh Lee Pattinson, “was an English industrial chemist. He was also an entrepreneur, sharing the risk of major industrial developments with famous ironmaster Isaac Lowthian Bell (He married Isaac’s daughter) and cable manufacturer Robert Stirling Newall.
