HOME ISSUE 7: OCTOBER 30, 2014 Yes, We Cane! From the Insurance Information Institute The official end of Hurricane Season is November 30. Of course, with a month to go, that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods yet—Sandy was a late-season storm. However, this does present a terrific six-month-long opportunity... for us to get ready for next year’s hurricane season. (What can we say; Sisyphus has nothing on us.) Sure, there are other things you could do between now and next June 1—and we wholeheartedly support you doing them. But a few moments spent now can save hours of work later on—and make your family, home, and possessions a lot safer in the bargain. So let’s start off with the easy stuff: 1. Check your homeowners or renters policy for hurricane deductibles, which are used by insurers in 19 states (and D.C.) situated along the Atlantic seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico. These are percentage deductibles for damage caused by hurricanes, and are separate from deductibles for other perils such as fire. 2. If you’re in one of those 20 states/territories—or anywhere near a body of water that’s prone to flooding—you should talk to your Insurance Professional about purchasing a separate flood insurance policy. 3. Be Hurricane Aware—there’s no substitute for planning ahead. Sure, it may seem early, but is there really such thing as being “too prepared”? Watch and Learn: Discover how having a pet evacuation plan can help smooth the “ruff” edges off of being a pet owner.
