“HOMETOWN HERO AWARDS & SILENT AUCTION” FUNDRAISER TO HONOR MICHIGAN’S COMMUNITY HEROES Mateen Cleaves Hope for the Holidays Event to Honor Community Leaders and Raise Funds to Benefit 1,000 Struggling Michigan Families WHAT: On Thursday, November 20, the Mateen Cleaves “1 Goal, 1 Passion: Hope for the Holidays” campaign will hold its second annual Hometown Hero Awards and Silent Auction fundraiser at the City Flats Hotel in Grand Rapids. The event, hosted by Spectrum Health Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Steven Heacock, will benefit 1,000 struggling Michigan families. Michigan State University Coach Tom Izzo and members of his 2000 NCAA National Championship team will be among the many special guests. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward creating miracles for 1,000 families nominated by non-profit agencies in Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Saginaw and Detroit. Each family will receive a holiday gift package that includes basic essentials, such as meals and gifts, utility vouchers, plus access to life sustainment programs including counseling to help families find jobs, healthcare and learn budgeting and financial planning skills. Thanks to a partnership with Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer Meijer, participating families will also receive a $100 Meijer gift card. Families will receive their gifts at their local Boys & Girls Clubs in each city. All gifts are being made possible with the support of sponsors but the fundraising is still underway! The public is urged to participate in giving hope and holiday cheer to Michigan families with a tax-deductible donation of $5. Hometown Heroes Award Ceremony The holiday affair will feature a special presentation of the Hope for the Holidays Hometown Hero Awards, honoring VIP’s who have given back tirelessly to the Michigan community. Award Categories: Community Service Award - Rosalynn Bliss, Director of Residential Services, .DA. Blodgett – St. John’s (DABSJ) Rising Star Award (Young Person) - Dr. Jason Slaikeu, Heart and Vascular Surgeon, Spectrum Health Medical Group Social Change Award - Austin Roelof, Program Manager, Kids Food Basket Business Leader Award – J.K. Symancyk, President of Meijer Legacy Award- Ambassador Peter F. Secchia Fellowship Award - Thomas Kelly, retired professional basketball player and MSU athlete Game Changer Award presented by the Detroit Pistons Silent Auction As part of the fundraiser, attendees will have the chance to place bids on items from their favorite Michigan sports teams during the event’s silent auction. Memorabilia from the Detroit Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers, Whitecaps, and MSU teams are among the items for bid.
