HOT TOPIC: Violent crime is up, but the number of trained Memphis police officers is down due to a mass exodus from the police department. 171 officers have left this year so far and it may have to do with uncertainty over the future of the citys pension program and cuts to health insurance benefits for city employees. Other Police departments have been coming to Memphis to recruit officers, offering them promises of better pay and better benefits.
