HOW TO SETTLE DISPUTES. "WORKER STRIKE AT THE DORA FACTORY Five or six months later I had my first real problem with my workers. We had some trouble shooters whom we had to send away. This caused a “revolution” amongst their friends which resulted in a strike in the factory. And this is where I put in practice the rule of not “hitting back” when at¬tacked, but rather using one’s wits to stop any possible escalation. As I walked into the factory one of the workers got hold of me by my jacket lapels, pulled me to him, and shouted “why did you send so-and-so away” I lifted my two arms up in the air and said “First of all let go of me” He had no choice but to let go! What else could he do? Then I took a step backwards to disengage and said: -”Secondly I did not send anybody away!” Effectively we had not yet sent anybody away. He had no further argument! Later we did send them away, but this was when things had cooled down! Especially that we had learned later that the man who aggressed me had been seen placing a dag¬ger in his belt, under his jacket! Then I faced the striking workers who were sitting on the curb looking at me to see what I would do. This was my second challenge. I looked at them and told them: -“I want to strike with you” and sat down on the curb between them! This diffused matters, got them all to smile or to laugh outright! The boss was striking with his workers! And we settled our dif¬ferences in an atmosphere of joviality and under¬standing of each other’s problems!"
