When preparation, determination and know-how fail to get you the results you crave, you may have no choice but to resort to good old-fashioned scare tactics, particularly when your competition is younger and less experienced than you. I tell my men all the time to pay attention to this kind of stuff because it’s important and it’s not going anywhere. In my line of work, guys have made lucrative careers out of inciting fear and scaring off the competition, but this strategy should not be limited to the underworld. Corporate bullying and psychological warfare are just two aspects of the seedier side of business, and without at least an awareness of how they operate, you will no doubt perish among the sharks. You can trumpet the importance of professional ethics all you want, but at the end of the day, they aren’t gonna do anything to help you overcome that tenacious opponent, the one who won’t stop at anything to get what he wants. E-mails, letters, word-of-mouth, phone calls — a combination of these will send a strong message of dominance and aggression.
