HOW did the fact that the TREE in The Giving Tree IS the MOTHER allude me for over 30 years? Ive read that book over and over, a zillion times to my children, to daycare children. Ive given that book to my children for their 18th birthdays. I knew that the tree loved LIKE a mother, and the boy loved the tree, but last night, when I was at my daughters house, I looked at her chalkboard that she has on her wall. Stephanie is an INCREDIBLE artist, and she drew the Tree on the board with the boy underneath. She wrote, And SHE loved a BOY very much, with her husbands initials, and all of her sons initials, SAM, LWM, CIM, and her new baby TAM. I said to her, The TREE IS the MOTHER? And she said, YES! well what did you think the tree was? And I said, A tree, that loved a boy. I started sobbing in her kitchen and the waterworks flooded, The TREE is the mother, the TREE is the mother, HOW DID I NOT GET THAT? I muttered over and over. So when the boy climbs up HER trunk and swings from her branches, its the mother swinging her child, playing with him, when she gives her apples, her branches, her trunk, it is the mother giving everything she has and a little bit more, like Stephanie does, like Courtney does, like Whitney does, like I do, like MY MOTHER did.
