HUGE victory today against the coal shipping terminal proposed at Cherry Point here in Northwest Washington State. Despite efforts by the coal terminal proponents to limit the scope of the required environmental impact study to only the terminal property, the co-lead agencies - Whatcom County, Washington State Department of Ecology, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - have set the scope to include potential impacts beyond the property, including air (including greenhouse gas implications), land, water, and habitat impacts in the greater county area, including Bellingham, as well as other state-wide and out-of-state locations where the coal trains will travel.
