HaPpY dAy Of Birth Darlene Guthrie Cates!!! Prologue: I am very happy to share with everyone a telephone call I did entertain with Darlene who did play Bonnie Grape in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape an original story and screenplay written by Peter Hedges. I prefer to describe the following dialogue as fun conversation(s) versus interview and Momma was extremely graciously to spend a portion of her evening with me. HAPPY DAY OF BIRTH MOMMA… On December 13, 1947, the Amarillo International Airport, Texas, recorded as the high temperature of 46.4F and a low of 17.4F as the world danced to “Ballerina” by Vaughn Monroe and His Orchestra the world welcomed with open arms Rita Darlene Guthrie. Today Momma celebrates with fans, friends and family her 67th Birth Day and Darlene possesses the same vibrant energy as she did when the world fell in love with her on the Sally Jesse Raphael (TV Series 1985-2002) and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). Later this very consecutive day, 12/13/14, Momma “Deputy” Bonnie Grape and her family will be celebrating with BBQ and German Chocolate Cake a QUADRUPLE BIRTHDAY BASH including celebrations for her and Bobs’ daughter Sheri (Jan. 04) and their youngest son Chris (Dec. 18) and his wife Starlet (Dec. 29). The following questions were discussed: 1. What Motivates You To Act? “The need for change… In 1993 I was depressed and the opportunity to act was happening at the same time as she was seeing the light in other ways in her life beyond her occupation. The Trip to New York was incredible to go to the Sally Jesse Raphael talk show. The roll of Momma was a huge change and I was scared to death yet here was a unique opportunity to say ‘Here I am’. I had the chance to change stereotypes and God was leading me. Today, I love acting and the experience I have playing characters and how they relate to my personal life.” 2. Who is your favorite actress/actor? “Linda Hunt because she is not ordinary. She is tenacious.” Momma remembers her best for her portrayal as Judge Zoey Hiller on the ABC drama The Practice (1997-2002). As for actor, well let’s just agree that there is an attraction that exists for Momma involving actor Robert Duvall… 3. Are you working on any current projects? Darlene has signed a letter of intent for two (2) upcoming projects. As part of the Production Blueprint, obtaining rights to the script, attaching “stars”, letters of intent, and other events occur during pre-production. The projects are “Snow Moon: Cinderella Chronicles Saga” and a current Off Broadway production entitled “Billboard”. 4. What has life taught you so far that you would like to share? “The only thing that you can really depend on is God. And KINDNESS is severely underrated in OUR world right now. This applies to how we treat people, animals and OUR environment.” 5. What is your Happy Birthday “WISH” you would like to share with your fans, friends and family? “That I am able to do more for myself and depend less upon others.” 6.
