Habagat enhanced TS Maring continues to bring heavy rains in MM by Jayson Leguiab Quezon City, Aug 20 (PIA) -- The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that Tropical Storm Maring has already flooded 50-60 percent of Metro Manila as it continues to bring heavy rainfall. According to the NDRRMC report, the current rainfall is nearing the 614 mm amount of rainfall set by the 3-day habagat last year. As of now, rainfall is at 549 mm in a span of almost 3 days. The PAGASA Sangley, Cavite station has already recorded a 475.4 mm amount of rainfall surpassing the 354.2 mm amount of rainfall it recorded from the Habagat last year. NDRRMC Usec. Eduardo del Rosario said that major thoroughfare in the Metro, including the Magallanes tunnel and SSH-Buendia, is already affected by heavy traffic due to flooding. Light Rail Transit (LRT) Stations in Roosevelt, Balintawak, Monumento and 5th Avenue is also affected by flooding from ankle to knee deep floods. All gates of the Napindan and the Manggahan floodways were already opened. Department of Interior and local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said they have enforced force evacuation to over 5,000 residents along the Marikina Riverbanks since the Marikina River has already reached 16.4 meters. Currently, NDRRMC have recorded a number of four casualties today, one in Bataan and three in Pampanga, all due to drowning. NDRRMC warns of possible landslides to soft soil and sloping areas in the Metro if the rain continues. The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) have deployed rescue teams and vacuum trucks in critical areas like Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas and Manila in anticipation of serious flooding if the rain persists. In its latest report, PAGASA forecasted that the rain will continue until late afternoon or early evening today in Metro Manila and its surrounding areas as TS Maring continues to move northward. Pangasinan, La Union and other parts of northern Luzon will experience scattered rain showers and thunder storms tomorrow. PAGASA expects that TS Maring will be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday. (jpl/PIA-ROD)
