Had a nice quiet moment this evening outside of my hotel in Perrysburg, Ohio. I took a break from the family hub-bub and obligations surrounding the clearing out of Heidis grandmothers house, who recently departed. This was the first time I have had to privately reflect on the passing of my cousin yesterday morning. This was also the first time I have ever witnessed the twittering dance and displays of woodcocks. I have read about them in great books such as The Sand County Almanac but never had the real experience until this evening. Such events were often spent with Rikki Hall in various areas of the country. I miss him but felt a great sense of relief as he is free of his illness and free as a bird. The birds were carrying on amidst the bleak cancerous landscape of highways, dead ash trees, and a wrecked environment. Their spirit seemed unaffected nor hindered despite the reality of their immediate environment. They pay it no mind much like my cousin in the last lucid moments I spent with him. He really will be everywhere- soaring unbridled and free. I look forward to seeing you somewhere tomorrow!
