Had almost a full day to myself in office with no classes or meetings lined up for today. Spent a stretch of almost six hours writing out a chapter contribution for an upcoming book. With my fingers fluttering over the keyboard, I found myself thinking that words and thoughts or worded thoughts are so much like people in your life. A new thought that has recently crossed your mind or a new word that is a recent addition to your vocabulary is like a new person youve recently met or a new friend youve recently made. And there there are the old words and old thoughts that have always been with you, just like the people whom youve known for a long time, who may or may not be alive any longer, who may or may not be a part of your life any longer, but are still with you. Writing is so much like living. Its made up of both new and old words and thoughts in your mind, both new and old people in your life. So, while writing for six hours today sometimes I found myself writing as I used to when I was a student, using my age-old favourite phrases and expressions and at other times I found myself writing like a typical new-age Facebooker, adding a smiley off and on and then hurriedly pressing the backspace key realising that I was writing supposedly serious stuff. :-)
