Had an interesting question posed to me this evening - this person was commenting on a Sunday School lesson I taught today. Why did God put a serpent on a pole when a serpent is a symbol of satan? The serpent actually symbolized SIN, just as Jesus became SIN for us when He died on the cross. In Numbers 21 the people murmured and complained and God sent poisonous serpents to bite them. Moses prayed for them and the only way they could be healed was to look at a bronze serpent that Moses erected on a pole. In the same way, WE ARE ALL BITTEN BY SIN. Our only cure is to look to Jesus on the cross. Remember: The Old Testament is CHRIST CONCEALED and the New Testament is CHRIST REVEALED. Jesus revealed Himself as the cure for sin in John 3 when He told one of the Jewish religious leaders, Even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so shall the Son of Man be lifted up so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
