Had asked DSGMC to follow with authorities the status of stranded Punjabis in Iraq. The Indian Ambassador in Baghdad wrote back: I would like to inform you that in the above mentioned issue of stranded Indian nationals in the disturbed areas of Iraq, the most important and immediate aspect of the problem is personal safety of the stranded people. I wish to inform you that the people are stranded not because of lack of travel documents nor lack of ticket. Both these can be arranged by the Embassy without any difficulty. Problem is that the roads to these stranded areas are controlled by unidentified armed group who are not under the control of Government of Iraq. You would have known from the media by this time that Government of Iraq lost control of certain areas and some of these Indians are stranded here. we have sought help of International agencies to give a safe passage to them to nearest airport.
