Had he lived, Tad Dembinski -- who had been David G. Hartwells assistant at Tor Books -- might today be one of the major editors in the science fiction and fantasy field; hed be 42 now. (Tad was also nominated for the Hugo Award as part of the editorial team for The New York Review of Science Fiction.) Sadly, though, Tad died fifteen years ago today, at the age of 27, on September 14, 1999, from a heart attack related to a childhood heart infection. I worked with Tad on my novels FRAMESHIFT and FACTORING HUMANITY from June 1996 (when I first met him, at Readercon) through his departure from Tor on August 15, 1997, to attend Yale University; I liked him a lot.
