Hadrian League – Match report Wednesday 7th May This home match against last years’ champions was going to be a stern test, especially as the weather took a turn for the worse and it rained continually and the wind was blowing strongly up the valley. Jonny Koranteng led off, and in typically calm style he coped with the difficult conditions and saw off his opponent with a 5&4 win. Greg Lee played well, but opponent Richie Rutherford seemed to have the best of any luck going and carved out a 3 up lead after 7 holes which he never let go of, and finally beat Greg 5&4. Gareth Black, playing at No.2 was having a bad day at the office, never getting grips with his game, and succumbed 4&3 to young Jonny Richardson who is playing well for Hexham. Dan Beeson, playing at No.1 against Sean Heads had been 3 up after 7 holes, and defying the cold and the rain he continued to dominate his match and he had a very satisfying victory, 3&2. At this point, scores were level at 4 points each. Out on the course, at opposite ends of the age spectrum, young James Wilson and slightly older (?) Steve Darbyshire were battling it out. James’s accuracy and precise short game took their toll as he ground out a hugely impressive win 3&2 against Jonathan Davey, and with puddles gathering on the greens, Steve held his nerve and got to Dormie 2 after 16 holes, winning the 17th and giving us another 2 points. Hexham won last years’ match 12 – 0, so our 8 – 4 win was an absolutely wonderful result and has given the team, and the Club a huge boost and hopes for a successful Hadrian League campaign as the season progresses. Congratulations to the team!! David Cockland Gents Captain 08/05/2014
