From the most elegantly carved to the simplest design, haircombs were made of everything from wood to ivory to tortoiseshell, in fact...any material available at the time.And these hairstyles of the fashionable ladies of the mid-19th century, so different from ours today, needed something to contain their long...lonnnng...tresses. So they twisted and braided and swept their locks back off their faces into spectacularly designed chignons. Doing so helped them achieve the signature look weve come to know, plus kept their tresses clean. Everyday hairstyles were simpler and more controlled than evening, but regardless of day or night, they found their fashionable combs, strategically placed, worked best to hold all that beautiful hair in place.
