Halloween at best represents a holiday from reason. A holiday from reason is ostensibly a good thing other than that it reveals the extent to which we have polarised our society, and thereby our minds, into a dualism of conscious and unconscious. That we are permitted a single day away from the rational world view show just how desperate the situation has become. All of our decisions, especially those which are ostensibly the most reasoned, are irrational. The more carefully we justify our motives, the more desperately we invite the irrational. This blindsiding of the intellect, the hobbling of the king by the jester, gives rise to the truly unheimlich. That this is going on all of the time and that is far more uncanny than the kitsch you may see on the streets tonight. Happy Halloween.
