Hammond and Scull say in their books that Tolkien had a copy of Edward Johnstons book on calligraphy, and that he practiced using his Foundational Hand. It is interesting to notice that Johnston had something to do with the Arts and Crafts movement, and that this movement was led by William Morris, whose literature influenced Tolkien. So, Morris influenced Tolkien in two different levels! This particular manuscript was written using a clumsy Foundational Hand, and the flowery pattern was losely based on that proposed by Johnston in his magnum opus. This was, in general, an attempt to give Sam at least the red letters...
