Hank Jenkin, a man who has been a CITES consultant has helped to broker a deal that will send up to 100 baby elephants from Zimbabwe and to China to suffer a life of misery in safari parks, circuses and zoos. Help us to try to stop this abomination. Sign the AVAAZ campaign and join the Twitter campaign. Enough is enough. NO MORE ELEPHANTS SHOULD EVER BE WILD CAUGHT FOR CAPTIVITY. Article IV, 2c of the convention states that, any “living specimen will be so prepared and shipped to minimize the risk of injury, damage to health or cruel treatment” and it must be to “appropriate and acceptable destinations, as defined in Resolution Conf. 11.20.” Ridiculously, it is the Management Authority of the importing country that decides whether a destination is appropriate. Of course China will say that their zoos are appropriate for elephants. We know they are NOT. CITES must amend the resolutions that permit this kind of abuse of wild animals! How can CITES permit the fox to guard the henhouse? Animal welfare specialists should be tasked to determine whether a destination is appropriate and whether a practice is cruel since CITES Management Authorities are clearly clueless.
