Happy Liberation Day, Guam!! Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands, a US territory. On 12/8/1941, Guam was taken over by the Japanese and occupied until the Second Battle of Guam in 7/1944, when American Forces freed the Chamorros. The Japanese War Crimes against the Chamorros included: beheadings, torture, forced labor, rapes, family separation, forced prostitution, seizure of assets, shortages of food and other neccessities, destruction of homes and concentration camps. Between 1000-2000 Chamorros died as a result of the Japanese occupation. During the Second Battle of Guam, 18,000 Japanese were killed and 485 were taken as POWs. 7000 Americans were killed in the line of duty during the Second Battle of Guam. In 1951, the US signed a Treaty of Peace with Japan and forgave them for all of their war debts. As a result, the Chamorros have demanded that the US make reparations to the survivors or their descendants for all of their sufferings. In 2009, Guam Delegate Madeleine Bordallo demanded up to $15,000 per victim (about $80,000,000), which is about 50% of what they were asking before. Previously, the US offered reparations for the survivors, but not for descendants, which Guam Delegate Bordallo rejected.
