Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month - 500,000 Cubans have fought in Africa alongside African revolutionaries in the Congo, Angola, Namibia and South Africa. Cuba helped free African countries from colonialism and apartheid, which is a largely unknown part of history outside of Cuba and Africa today. Cuba politically, militarily and diplomatically supported the South West Africa Peoples Organization (SWAPO) during the Namibian War of Independence. SWAPO fought against the military of apartheid South Africa. Cuba deployed more than 350,000 troops to Africa to aid the independence movements in Angola and Namibia, among other causes. Approximately 2,000 Cubans died in the independence struggle in the region. In early 1965 Che Guevara went to Africa to offer his knowledge and experience as a guerrilla to the ongoing conflict in the Congo. Cuba has also provided political asylum for members of the NAACP and Black Panther like Robert Franklin William and Assata Shakur. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, and with over 11 million inhabitants. The percentage of people of African descent in the Cuban population varies from 33% to 62%.
