Happy New Year everyone! Everybody loves a fresh start, but it - TopicsExpress

Happy New Year everyone! Everybody loves a fresh start, but it can be overwhelming when you think about all the things you didnt do last year and all you want accomplish in the new year. Im not big on resolutions because I feel like they fizzle out after a couple of months. As a result, you beat yourself up and feel crappy for the rest of the year. I like to refer to them as lifestyle changes instead. This terminology sounds a little more permanent and sets you up for long-term success. Its not so much about the RESOLUTION, its more about how you MANAGE ACHIEVING your GOALS. I had several goals last year, some I achieved and some fell short..way short. I took a moment to analyze why I had great success with some goals while others didnt really seem to gain much traction. The successful goals were very specific, had a step-by-step blueprint on how I was going to achieve each goal and they had timelines attached to them. They were on my vision board, on the bathroom mirror and scribbled in a notebook on the nightstand. They were visible everywhere so they stayed top of mind. According to a study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, out of the 45% of Americans who make New Years Resolutions, only 8% of them will be successful. Here are the top reasons why we fall short of achieving our goals: 1. We have way too many! Its best to narrow it down to 1-3 things that you really want to achieve in the next year. We all know how fast a year can go by. If you have a list of 20 things, most of that stuff is so not gonna get done....sorry, but its true. 2. We are not specific enough. If you say I want to make more money this year, thats way too vague. How are you going to get there? Maybe its by taking a class specific to your job, or signing up 10 new accounts if youre a salesperson. Review time is coming up. Ask your supervisor for a job description of that job youve had your eye on and what you need to work on this year to prepare for it. As a former sales manager, I found that so many people got looked over for promotions because they didnt express interest in moving up in the company until it was too late. 3. Lack of accountability. Get social! Its important to share your goals with supportive people. Post your milestones on Facebook and let your friends cheer you on. If fitness is your goal, dont buddy up with a friend whos a couch potato and might not stick with it. Instead, partner up with your most fit friend. She/he will be more likely to keep you on your toes. Alright girls (and guys), lets kick some butt in 2015! What are some of your goals? Remember to break them down and be specific!
