Happy Old Skool Friday with JL. Each week taking a look at some great songs gone from the charts but not from our hearts. This week: We celebrate triple j 40th birthday - formally 2JJ or Double J when the station first kicked-off in 1975. More than just a radio station, Triple J has been a significant influence on youth culture in Australia and it was impeccable timing to launch such an initiative in 1975 - a period when things were starting to drift. True to form in Australia, Triple J became a classic example of the bureaucratic anxiety of a remote colonial outpost threatened by anything or anyone that looks or sounds different, and they tried very hard to shut the station down. So how do I pick a single song to celebrate 40 years of Triple J?!! Well, without Triple J my all-time favourite band may never have made it out of the local pub scene. Since inception, Triple J has relentlessly searched for and promoted independent music and in many respects a pioneer of the current live music scene and structure in Australia. So I couldnt go past Midnight Oils live performance on Goat Island in Sydney Harbour to celebrate Triple Js 10th birthday. But, one awesome thing that Triple J did many years ago was to start promoting local indigenous bands and music. An early influential was The Warumpi Band - a band of great musicians with an important message for broader Australia, as told through fantastic lyrics. The Warumpi Band had a very close relationship with Midnight Oil. As we spend this weekend self-indulging in an over-inflated view of ourselves, here is Blackfella Whitefella by The Warumpi Band - a rockin good tune. My favourite lyrics from the song are: All the people / of different races / with different lives / from different places / it doesnt matter / which religion / its all the same / when the ship is sinking. youtu.be/M_DHwp5vYBI
