Happy Ramadan to all my Muslim friends and family! I wish you special spiritual insight and growth during this Holy month. In Arabic the word is swam (refrain) For those who may know people who are fasting, it is not only about refraining from food and drink during daylight hours, but also from evil actions, thoughts and words. Many spend this time quietly in prayer and reading the Quran. It is a time of reflection, renewal and community. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. There are exceptions if one is sick, traveling, pregnant, lactating, etc. As one can imagine, much easier to do within a supportive community or culture. For those of us not Muslim,its a time to be sensitive and not judge. And whom of us could not use more of such refrain ourselves even if we dont fast from food???
