Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! On Thanksgiving Eve, I suggested at our afternoon editorial meeting -- where we discussed stories for our 10pm and 11pm newscasts -- that we shouldnt forget to include video, from the airport, of homecomings, of loved ones reuniting. Just seeing a few moments of all of that uninhibited joy at the top of the escalators where passengers enter the main terminal to meet those waiting for them is always a powerful and lovely reminder of how dear this holiday is to so many. A diversion from the regular, hard news of the night. The decision at the editorial meeting was, Okay, sure. And were sending you to do the story. I was not expecting that. Id been thinking that a photographer would be perfect to produce a brief, video essay, if you will, of just the pictures and sounds of families beginning their Thanksgiving. Which is still a great way to cover it, every year. I had no idea what I would do. I drove to Hartsfield-Jackson, walked in, fired up my video camera, and just started talking to people, soldiers and civilians, and tried to knit together for our late newscasts an appreciation of them and their attitude of gratitude, people who are thankful despite having, as so many of us have had, another tough year.
