Harry’s picks 102214 part b The BC is but nine days hence and the excitement is building even near the distant shores of Plymouth Rock! The last of the contenders which I find have a link in the tail female department to Secretariat, is Home Run Kitten, a critter which in recent moons took the Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar? - whatever the track might have been, Home Run Kitten has a pretty good record at Santa Anita Park having tasted victory in 4 of 7 runs over the Great Race Place configurations. I counted at least 25 teams trying to get into the Turf Sprint, so just getting into this race would be a victory in a way- Home Run Kitten, was sold I believe by the Ramsey’s of Kentucky, who are among the top tier breeders and owners in the wider world- maybe this one got away – whatever the case; the pedigree for HRK is sired by Kitten’s Joy, who was the leading stallion of 2013 and out of the mare Grand Slam Girl, whom I suppose was sired by Gone West agent Grand Slam- indeed- the broodmare sire array for this 3yo chestnut colt is an enticing mixology > Grand Slam>Tabasco Cat, a classic winner>Forty Niner a brilliant agent of the 1-N female family of ancient Chelandry>Secretariat, our greatest equine and sire of 4th dam talented Cinegita- Cinegita, might been the 1st foal of Secretariat which won when I bet on her in the dim past- she was very quick and accounted for the Railbird Stakes, the latter in its day a very top flight west coast contest- she was bred by silver “King” Nelson Bunker Hunt (he may have been a member of the original Secretariat syndicate) and eventually she became property of WT Young whose Storm Cat, became the ultimate sire in the world for quite a while- anyhow, Cinegita, was from the distant shores of ff “25” a group hardly ever in the headlines, at least in my memory- the last star out of that family I can recollect was One Count, who may have won a classic race in the US about 60 years ago! In the stud Cinegita saw a top assortment of studs and the best of her progeny may have been Japan racing star Syourinomegami (?) who won over 2000K in the orient- in fact the great ill-fated Flanders, traces back to Cinegita-and Flanders won the BC Juvenile fillies G1 back in 1994- yet another stateside G1 winner stemming from Cinegita, was Surfside, who won the Santa Anita Oaks at 3yo and the Frizette at 2yo!- another point about Cinegita, is that she had some very fine runners of G1 ability racing in South America. Can a hoss from family 25 take down a breeders Cup event in 2014? Well, Home Run Kitten, is a sort of home town guy and locals have had very good results over the years the BC has been presented in Hollywoodland- Fran’s Valentine, comes to mind and a couple of Richard Mandela runners a number of years ago- some horses ship well and others don’t relish moving from their home “boxes” to unfamiliar surroundings even those as lovely as the neighborhood of Arcadia- Home Run Kitten, then has a dosage index of 2.69 and a dosage profile of 6-7-9-2-0 which appears to be a suitable set for a sprinter- add a WBH9GCF of “31”! and some happy punters may be on display following the results of the Turf Sprint- the dam of Home Run Kitten, was unsuccessful Grand Slam Girl- she in turn was a daughter of Itama, who was inbred to mightiest Secretariat 4x3- all that and she managed to win a race! A very tough game for sure! - And aside from the subject of this essay, nothing much has come along dating directly to Itama- To conclude about Home Run Kitten, Northern Dancer is located 4x5 in its 5 generation map thru Sadler’s Wells, who sired about 280 stakes winners! And El Gran Senor, Winner of the Irish Sweepstakes! As for Kitten’s Joy, the pride of the Ramsey’s of Kentucky, he has a noted trio in his immediate generations via Lady Capulet, Bramalea, and the remarkable Fanfreluche! Now how can you beat that?! So the 4 possible for the BC in 2014 tracing directly to a Secretariat sired female are>Bourbon Courage>Home Run Kitten>Capo Bastone, who is considering the Dirt Mile & Wind Fire- sorrowfully the best of these type of horses currently in training Wise Dan, will not participate I the 2014 BC.
