Has Zahid taken over from Najib as the new PM? If not, why is he telling a deputy minister in the PM department to quit, and also saying that the repeal of draconian laws such as ISA and EO – done by Najib earlier – was premature, all in the same breath? Appointment or dismissal of ministers and deputy ministers is the prerogative of the prime minister, and no prime minister should tolerate his cabinet member to show him such disrespect as Zahid did – in not only publicly running down a deputy minister in PM’s department, but also publicly criticising key reform policies executed by PM himself. On reflection, Zahid’s conduct is perhaps just another indication of the common view that the PM has already been reduced to a lame duck by the hawks in Umno.
