Firstly, most YES voters know that the SNP is not particularly radical/socialist. However, the opportunity for leftist parties, such as Green and Socialist, will widen and grow in an independent Scotland, especially after this entire referendum phenomenon which is getting people involved in politics that have never bothered before. The reason that leftist parties are small/less voted-for isnt because theres no interest, its because for the past, oh, all of modern history, those who are the most visible, most vocal, most widespread are those with the most money and ability to control/buy/influence media. Its like saying the reason One Direction are bigger than my mates in the West End are because theyre better. Theyre not better, theyre just louder, more commercial, more packaged and more advertised. This entire thing is written like some sort of attempt to discredit the Yes campaign BECAUSE it is drawing together people who normally wouldnt agree or vote the same way. Thats one of the greatest parts of it, and the only positive that will remain in the event of fear winning out. People from all backgrounds - right, left, middle-class, working-class, poor, intellectual, skilled, none of the above - are coming together for YES because they recognise that, regardless of the various things which will still be under debate and compromise in an independent Scotland, at least the people of Scotland will be voting. If it takes a while to drift further left/socialist because a lot of people arent that way inclined, well, thats fine. Not ideal to some of us, but democratic, at least. What we have now is not democracy. I dont appreciate knocking doors in run-down estates of our cities and chattering excitedly about the imminent new dawn in the dining kitchens of the west end of Glasgow being mocked or condescended to like its something silly and ridiculous. That is EXACTLY the attitude that is losing this for the no camp. They have nae respect for nor understanding/appreciation of actual, normal, unimportant members of the populace, nor the ability to comprehend that an All we need is hope and things will fall into place attitude is precisely what is required for our country, for our whole species, to change the path were on before its too late (if it isnt already).
